Traces of Buddhism in North Sumatra
Candi Bahal, a Buddhist temple complex located in Padang Lawas Regency, North Sumatra, is an important historical evidence of Buddhism in the region. Also known as Candi Portibi, its age is estimated to be equal to that of Candi Muara Takus in Riau, which is around the 12th century.
The Candi Bahal complex consists of three temples that are separated by about 500 meters each. The temples are made of red brick, with statues made of hard stone. Each temple is surrounded by a 1-meter high red brick fence.

- Current condition: Candi Bahal is currently poorly maintained, overgrown with weeds and surrounded by savanna. The walls of the temple are also full of graffiti.
- Tourist attraction: Despite its poor maintenance, Candi Bahal has been officially designated a tourist attraction by the government. This place is crowded on holidays, Eid al-Fitr, and New Year.
