Dr. Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen: A Missionary of Great Influence in the Batak Land
Dr. Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen was a German missionary who played a crucial role in spreading Protestant Christianity in the Batak region. He was the founder of the Batak Christian Protestant Church (Huria Kristen Batak Protestan or HKBP), the largest church in the Batak land.
Nommensen was born in Nordstrand, Germany, on February 6, 1834. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong desire to serve God. In 1861, he embarked on a mission to the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) to begin his work in the Batak region.
Nommensen’s journey in the Batak land was far from easy. He faced various challenges, including unfamiliar customs, an unfamiliar language, and even threats from the local population. However, with determination and love, Nommensen succeeded in spreading the Christian teachings and building a Christian community in the Batak region.
Known for his simplicity, humility, and close connection with the local people, Nommensen learned the Batak language and used it to communicate with the inhabitants. He also translated the Bible into the Batak language, making it easier for the Batak people to understand God’s word.
Nommensen devoted his life to serving God and the people of the Batak land. He passed away on May 23, 1918, and was buried behind the HKBP Nommensen Sigumpar Church, approximately 12 km from the town of Balige.
To this day, Nommensen’s contributions are remembered by the Batak community. He is considered a significant figure in the history of the Batak land.
