A Unique Natural Phenomenon on Samosir Island
Samosir Island, located in the middle of Lake Toba, Indonesia, boasts a unique natural phenomenon known as “a lake above a lake.” This nickname is given to Lake Sidihoni, or Tao Sidihoni, due to its elevation being higher than that of Lake Toba.
Uniqueness of Lake Sidihoni:
- Higher Than Lake Toba: Lake Sidihoni sits at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level (masl), while Lake Toba is at 905 masl.
- Strategic Location: Lake Sidihoni is easily accessible, only 8 kilometers from Pangururan, the capital of Samosir Regency.
- Beautiful Scenery: The journey to Lake Sidihoni offers stunning views.
History of Lake Sidihoni:
- Formation from Lakebed Uplift: Lake Sidihoni was formed due to the uplifting of Lake Toba’s bed, known as “resurgent doming.”
- Basin System: A basin formed by local faults filled with water and became Lake Sidihoni.
Functions of Lake Sidihoni:
- Water Source: Lake Sidihoni’s water is used for daily needs such as drinking, washing, and bathing buffaloes.
- Cultural Value: The local community has a tradition of “marsattabi” to ask permission from the ancestors before taking water from the lake.
- Natural Omen: The color of Lake Sidihoni’s water is believed to be a sign of good or bad things to come.
