Built over 100 years ago by Medan’s famous entrepreneur, Tjong A Fie, the mansion stands magnificently, well-preserved despite its age. The 6,000-square-meter building showcases a blend of Chinese, Malay, and European architectural styles.

As a cultural heritage site in Medan, Tjong A Fie Mansion boasts 40 spacious rooms. About a third of them serve as a museum, displaying a fusion of Chinese, European, Malay, and art-deco architectural styles. Wood dominates the furniture and building structure, from the Chinese-ornamented roof to the stairs and partition walls.
Uncovering Stories and Culture
Stepping into the front room, you are immediately transported to the past. A large portrait of Tjong A Fie and his family greets you, telling the story of his life. Photos of precious family moments, birthdays, weddings, and important meetings, along with paintings and furniture, bear witness to the history and culture of the Malay-Chinese community.
Rooms Filled with Charm
The spacious prayer room is adorned with Chinese ornaments, paintings, and Han script decorations. The bedroom features a classic wooden bed with a canopy, while the family gathering and living rooms showcase Malay style with a dominant yellow color. The library, filled with stacks of books, completes the picture of a bygone era.

The second floor of the mansion is dominated by a large room with numerous windows, allowing for maximum natural lighting. Collections of photos and furniture are neatly arranged, creating a more modern feel compared to the first floor.
The central part of the mansion is designed with many windows facing an open space. This design is believed to bring good fortune according to Chinese tradition.
