Kualanamu International Airport: The Gateway to North Sumatra
Location and Role:
Kualanamu International Airport (KNIA) is an international airport serving Medan city and its surrounding areas in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Located in Deli Serdang Regency, 26 km east of Medan city center, KNIA is the third largest airport in Indonesia after Soekarno-Hatta Jakarta and Kertajati Majalengka in West Java.
History and Development:
Built on the former estate of PT Perkebunan Nusantara II Tanjung Morawa, KNIA is part of the MP3EI (Masterplan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Development) and replaces the more than 85-year-old Polonia International Airport. The airport began operating on July 25, 2013, and is designed to be an international transit hub for the Sumatra region and beyond.
Reasons for Relocation:
The development of KNIA was driven by several factors, including:
- Operational and development limitations of Polonia Airport in the middle of Medan city.
- Facilities at Polonia were unable to accommodate the ever-increasing air transportation needs.
Capacity and Facilities:
- Phase I can accommodate 8.1 million passengers and 10,000 aircraft movements per year.
- Phase II will accommodate 25 million passengers per year.
- Passenger terminal with an area of 6.5 hectares with a commercial area of 3.5 hectares and cargo area of 1.3 hectares.
- Runway length of 3.75 km, suitable for Boeing 777 and has 8 garbarata.
- Capable of accommodating Airbus A380, Antonov An-225, and Boeing 747-8.

Railway:
- Airport Railink Services connects the airport to Medan Station.
- Travel time of 30-47 minutes.
- Ticket price of Rp80,000.
- Operated by PT Railink, a joint venture between PT Angkasa Pura II and PT KAI.
- The first airport railway in Indonesia.
Bus:
- Connected to Medan, Binjai, Pematangsiantar, Kabanjahe, and Gunung Sitoli.
- Operated by DAMRI, Almasar, ALS, and Trans Medan.
Roads and Toll Roads:
- Connected to the Medan-Kualanamu-Tebing Tinggi Toll Road towards Medan.
- Connected to Jalan Raya Sultan Serdang to Medan and Jalan Bakaran Batu to Deli Serdang.
Kualanamu International Airport is a vital gateway for North Sumatra, with its large capacity, modern facilities, and good connectivity. The airport plays a significant role in supporting economic and tourism growth in the region.
