Geological Aspects
The lake sediment units found in the Huta Tinggi area consist of sediments in a calm water environment (lacustrine), consisting of alternating pyroclastic material ranging from gravel-gravel to silt-sand. There is a normal-stepped fault structure, thought to be related to the local tectonic dynamics that occurred after the deposition of the above material. In the middle of the caldera which has become a lake with a water level of + 900 m above sea level, there is Samosir Island, oval in shape, with The highest place reaches 1600 m above sea level. The presence of several stagnant lakes or reservoirs (sag-ponds) makes this area unique, namely ‘an island (Samosir) above an island (Sumatra) and a lake (Aek Natonang etc.) above a lake (Toba)’. The formation of landscape lineaments and the presence of several rain-fed lakes on Samosir Island with certain directional orientations, indicate the similarity of the lineament patterns with the Great Sumatran Fault system. The formation of rain-fed lakes on Samosir Island (Aek Natonang, Sidihoni etc.) indicates that the land surface in these places is relatively impermeable, this is one of the characteristics of lake sediments which are silty (water-impermeable).
